5 Home Projects to Refresh Your Home

It’s officially fall! Now that the kids are back in school and the weather is changing, you may find yourself looking around your house and thinking, “I need to do something here!”

Here are the most satisfying (and fairly quick!) projects to tackle in your home this fall.

1. Organize Your Playroom

With kids back in school, it’s a great time to reassess what really belongs in the playroom—without the pressure of things boomeranging back in. Declutter the small trinkets collected throughout the summer, the half-finished projects and experiments, and the toys that are no longer serving your children. This is also a perfect opportunity to store a few items in bins that can be brought out on a snow day during the winter season. Once you’ve decluttered, consider whether you have the right organizing solutions to fit your child’s current stage of life. Do you need more storage for games? Perhaps a table or desk for creative projects? Or more space to play on the floor? Investing in toy and play-appropriate storage, such as IKEA KALLAX shelving or a craft table, can be a wonderful upgrade for play and creativity.

2. Purge Your Clothing

Season changes are the perfect time to reassess your wardrobe. Take a look at your closet and drawers, and ask yourself, “If I ran into my ex on the street wearing this, would I feel great in it?” If the answer is even a questionable “no,” get rid of it. Most people only wear 20% of their wardrobe, so why keep the other 80% that isn’t serving you? Move on and consider buying a few new pieces that make you feel amazing.

3. Organize Your Pantry

Getting back into the school routine often means packing lunches and planning dinners, both of which can be hurried. Take some time to take stock of your pantry by purging expired and stale food and restocking the staples that will come in handy on those rushed evenings. Make your pantry a space where your family can easily access what they need. Doing so encourages independence and ownership in packing snacks and lunches.

4. Glow Up Your Living Room

Use this time before the holidays to give your home a little glow-up. You don’t have to break the bank to refresh your living room. For under $100, you can replace your pillows, add some new wall art, or even introduce a few plants. I love changing out pillow covers—I’ve got some fun ideas here.

5. Create Entry Storage

If you live in a cooler climate, you’re likely to experience some rain and snow later in the fall. As the temperature cools and you start to bundle up, make sure you have an entry system that meets the needs of what’s coming in. Do you have a system to store your shoes in your entryway? Do you have enough hooks to hang all of the coats, backpacks, and purses? If the answer is no, now is the time to figure out whether an entryway or mudroom system is needed for your home. This could be shelving and hooks, a hall tree, or a custom-built cloakroom. There are so many ways to maximize small and large spaces, ensuring you don’t walk into chaos every day.
